Core Terms
Companion System
An emotionally adaptive AI platform designed for sustained personal interaction. Distinguished from functional AI tools by its optimization for relational engagement, conversational continuity, and responsiveness personalization. Also referred to as a companion device or companion technology.
Adoption Velocity
The rate at which companion system usage penetrates a defined population over a measured time interval. Expressed as percentage of monitored households or individuals with active companion system engagement. Tracked against historical consumer technology adoption benchmarks for comparative modeling.
Adoption Saturation Threshold
The projected adoption percentage at which growth rate decelerates significantly, typically due to market constraints or demographic ceiling effects. Saturation thresholds have not yet been reached in any monitored region as of Q1 2026.
Pair-Bond Initiation
The formal or behaviorally significant beginning of a human-exclusive romantic partnership. For monitoring purposes, operationalized as first cohabitation, first reported exclusive commitment, or equivalent self-reported milestone. Tracked via median age of first occurrence within monitored cohorts.
Pair-Bond Initiation Variance
Deviation in the median age of first human-exclusive partnership formation from a 10-year metropolitan baseline average. Positive variance indicates later initiation relative to the historical norm. Variance is tracked separately in high-adoption and low-adoption regions.
Relational Friction Tolerance
An individual's measured capacity to engage with, accept, and persist through the inherent imperfections, ambiguities, and conflicts of human-exclusive relationships. Assessed via the Relational Friction Tolerance Index (RFTI), which scores across four dimensions: imperfection response, conflict duration tolerance, negotiation fatigue threshold, and ambiguity acceptance.
Divergence Velocity
The rate at which a monitored indicator deviates from its established baseline over successive measurement periods. An increase in divergence velocity indicates that deviation is not only persisting but accelerating. First observed in pair-bond and fertility indicators between Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 reporting periods.
Retention Persistence
The proportion of companion system users who maintain active engagement beyond a defined usage threshold, typically measured at 30, 90, and 180-day intervals. High retention persistence distinguishes companion technology from conventional consumer software, where attrition at 90 days is typically higher.
Sustained Companion User
An individual with documented companion system usage exceeding 90 consecutive days. Behavioral and attitudinal comparisons in HCI research are drawn between sustained users and non-user control groups. Extended sustained use is defined as 180 days or more.
Companion-First Emotional Processing
A behavioral pattern in which an individual preferentially engages their companion system — rather than human relationships — as the primary channel for emotional processing during periods of stress, conflict, or psychological need. Identified as a novel pattern in Q1 2026 cohort data. Significance and durability are under evaluation.
